If there ever was a good thing about winter, it’s that citrus is in season.  Grapefruit is my favorite, but all different kinds of oranges and lemons, and limes show up with all of their beautiful colors to brighten up the snowy days. And I’m pretty okay with it.


When it comes to citrus, though, sometimes it’s hard to figure how to ‘cook’ with it versus just eating it as is.  Below are some great family friendly citrus recipes to get you started in the right direction.  Additionally I’ll share some general tips on what pairs well with each kind of fruit.




Pairs well with: avocado, blue cheese, watercress, shellfish; picture some kind of amazing salad using these ingredients.




Pairs well with: almonds, beets, bacon, carrot, walnut, whitefish, cilantro, chili; think whitefish tacos with a carrots orange slaw and a chili aioli to drizzle over – yum. Or orange chicken is always a winner.




Pairs well with: coconut, chicken, beef, butternut squash, peanut, shellfish, basil; this sounds like some inspiration for some Thai inspired dishes or curries.




Pairs well with: chicken, dill, egg, olive, parsley, smoked fish, thyme; I’m feeling any kind of chicken/smoked fish/egg salad here and serve on some bread for the kiddos.
