Tips to Save for Back to School

by | Jul 17, 2019 | Parenting, Products and Services

I am in utter shock that I am writing this.  How to Save for Back to School?  Back to School?????   How is it that time of the year already?  It feels like my kids just got out of school and now we’re ready to start shopping for pencils, uniforms, backpacks, etc.  I feel like I need another month.  Or maybe 2 because I feel really slighted that June was so rainy and cool.   But here we are, mid-July and circulars, commercials and now even blog posts are taking about going back to school.  Back to the routine and back to the ugh…homework!  For any mom that has to buy 103 things for school, it can be overwhelming and expensive!  Add to that, most kids want the notebook that costs $6 and has JoJo Siwa on the cover and not the plain $.25 one from Staples.  New clothes, new pencils, new binders and notepads…kids are expensive!

Back to school doesn’t have to empty your wallet and it can be really fun to go shopping with your kids to buy new things.  But, if you are like me, you don’t like to pay anymore for things than you really need too!!  Below are the ways that I save the most during back to school time!!

If you have an awesome hack, get in touch via Instagram or Facebook & drop a comment!

If you haven’t signed up for Ebates yet, now is the time!!  Ebates is a savings website (or app) that you use to click on the store of your choice and be routed to their website.  This is how Ebates keeps track of how much money you will get back.  Then you just shop as normal!  I love Ebates.  It’s so easy to save with them AND get a percentage back from every purchase online.  You can get money back from just about anything, clothing, books, travel, hotels, makeup, etc.  Not only that, if you link your credit card, you can get money back from shopping in the store too!!  I have saved hundreds using this app and the money I get back every quarter,  I use to add to my Christmas fund!  It’s a win win!

Walmart Pick-Up

I was never really a fan of Walmart (for obvious reasons) until a friend of mine told me about their pick up option.  You download their app and shop.  Schedule a time to go pick it up and then drive to their pickup location next to the store and wait for someone to come out with all of your groceries.  I have to say, I’ve been really impressed.   I ordered something right before Easter and the Easter bunny came out and gave my kids candy.  Another time, they gave me free roses!  The people who work at the pick up are also extremely nice and have fun at their job!!   And Walmart has school supplies and you can order them through their pick up app, how easy is that?  Also,  if you are new to the app, you can get $10 off your first order when you use this link! Pour yourself some wine and get shopping!!

Buy, Sell, or Rent Text Books with Amazon

Textbooks are expensive.  If you went to college, you already know this and if you have High School or College aged kids, you will want to check out Amazon for their textbooks.  You can sell last years and with the money they give you, you can put it towards this years books.  You can even rent textbooks and then return them when you are done!

Tax Free Weekend

Paying taxes can really add up!  But thankfully, Ohio is part of the Tax Free Weekend this year starting on Friday, August 2 at 12 AM and ending on Sunday, August 4 at 11:59 PM.  Here is what is included:

  • Clothing priced at $75 per item or less;
  • School supplies priced at $20 per item or less; and
  • School instructional material priced at $20 per item or less.

Don’t forget, you can make more than one transaction.  So if you need clothing at different stores, it will all be tax free if you stay at $75 or less!

Join Honey

My 10 year old son actually downloaded this tool to my laptop because he knows I shop online a lot!  And, I was skeptical, but seriously, do this.  You  download Honey for FREE from  their website and it does all the work for you.  When you go to order something on the web, Honey will notify you if what is in your cart is the best deal or if there is a cheaper price, or promotion code to use to save money.  It’s so easy and it even works on Amazon!!  Best of all, it’s free to use!!  I’m not kidding when I say…get this now!!  It’s a game-changer!

Price Match

The easiest way to grab a deal without having to go to 8 different stores is to price match.   Make sure you read the stores policy before you go, as you might need to bring the other stores circular or have the information on your phone.   If you have any questions, make sure to talk to a store manager!

Amazon Prime Student

There’s never been an easier time to send a care package to your College Student!  If they are new to Amazon, you can save on Amazon Prime, with 6 months free!  They will get unlimited 2-day shipping on everything (no minimum required) and exclusive deals and promotions just for them!!

Stock Up

Prices this low don’t last long, so stock up in case your child needs to replenish half way through the school year.  It’s also a great time to buy and donate to schools or families who cannot afford all the supplies needed!!

Price Adjustments

There is nothing more frustrating than buying something today and then finding out tomorrow that it’s onsale.  So, keep your receipts because some stores offer price adjustments.  If not, you can always return the item and re-purchase it for the lower price.

Dollar Tree

Before you get shopping at Target, Walmart and Staples, check out the Dollar Tree!  I was surprised at how much they offer!  But make sure you go soon, as their inventory gets picked over pretty quickly!!

Under Amour Lunch Box

If you do nothing else, buy this lunchbox!!!!  My son has had his for 4 years and it’s still going strong.  The inside has a hard plastic lining, so it keeps its shape and withstands spills!  Super easy to clean and holds up getting tossed in bins, down steps and all around.
