10 Reasons Why I Love Whole30
10 Reasons I Heart Whole30:
1. Whole30 is not about weight loss.
This is refreshing. This is about a complete overhaul of your system. And in the process it really kind of turns out to be a complete overhaul of your life. It brings things that are important into focus and paves the way for reprioritization of your whole approach to health and wellness. Whole30 is about food but it really isn’t about food.
2. Whole30 is sustainable.
100%. This isn’t a crash diet. And it’s not about eating Whole30 all the time either. It gives you the tools to set yourself up for healthy eating for the long term. I think this is the biggest difference between Whole30 and all the other fads, diets, workout plans, out there. This is flexible, it works with your body, and it can change over time based on your needs, what you learn through reintroductions, and what you deem is worth it in your food freedom.
3. Whole30 changed my tastebuds.
For real. There’s a time and a place for highly processed foods but for the most part I stay away from anything that has high fructose corn syrup in it and most other ingredients that follow that general idea, because now I can actually taste how how artificial it is. And I have actually learned that I do not like that taste. Real food for the win!
4. Whole30 changed the way I grocery shop.
Yes, I’m the person standing in the aisle picking up every single jar of pasta sauce and reading the label religiously. Sorry, not sorry. There are so many delicious foods you can enjoy while on the Whole30 but there are also many ingredients you need to avoid. I have spent a lot of time googling in the grocery store. Support brands who are on a mission to do better. Who have committed to keeping ingredients simple & real. Your money can make a difference here and there’s a whole slew of companies who have climbed aboard this train.
5. Whole30 changed the way I cook.
I didn’t really know what meal prep was before I started my first Whole30. And while I’m definitely not a meal prep extraordinaire (it takes time & practice!) I now realize that food doesn’t have to be complicated to be good and nutritious. Hello roasted veggies!
6. Whole30 taught me that food isn’t good or bad.
There is only food that is good or bad for YOU, based on what you learn through your Whole30 and what you decide is worth it. I learned, from the Whole30, that I have a sensitivity to nightshades, eggplants particularly (they make me breakout and give me instant headaches). First of all, I would have never realized this if I hadn’t done a Whole30 because I would have probably attributed these symptoms to the more common culprits- dairy or gluten. And second of all, it redefined for me what ‘good’ was – eggplant is technically good because it’s a vegetable and yada yada but it’s not good FOR ME because of how it affects me body. This small experience was eye opening for me.
7. Whole30 taught me how to decide if a food is ‘worth it’ or not.
And this one is definitely still a journey. But I think the ‘worth it’ decision that has come easiest for me is dessert, because I can taste the difference between quality and not. It’s not worth it to me to have any old cupcake or packaged donuts or boring store bought cookies from the grocery story. It’s not special and not particularly good and so it’s an easy decision. But the coconut bars from Corbo’s bakery are 100% worth it if I’m in the mood. Those things are little bars of heaven.
8. Whole30 taught me to question my normal.
I did my first Whole30 in an effort to get rid of joint pain that I truly thought I shouldn’t have. And my suspicions were confirmed when the pain was 100% gone after 30 days. Sometimes you’ve just lived with something for so long that it just becomes normal (headaches, pain, low energy), when really it’s a symptom of some bigger more systemic issue and I think Whole30 can be used as a tool to uncover the underlying cause of some of these things.
9. Whole30 opened my world up to a whole HUGE supportive community of likeminded people who are on this same journey.
So many food bloggers that have taught me better ways to meal prep, better recipes, people who have turned me onto great book recommendations, different and better forms of exercise. So many people leaving little breadcrumbs to pick up and explore. Whole30 has leaked into so many other areas of my life in the best ways.
10. Whole30 lets you feel in control of at least one thing in your life.
A huge reason I wanted to do a breastfeeding Whole30 was because I was feeling really out of control with my life in general. I mean a little human has been taking over every area of my life after all. With the Whole30 being so black and white it really takes the guesswork out of what you can and can’t have and gives you a sense of control over yourself. It also was something I could do just for me. Sometimes, as a mom, you just need to do something for yourself. But, like I said before, the benefits ultimately influence so many other parts of your life, including the health and well being of your family. There is actually a whole space dedicated to Whole30 for pregnancy, breastfeeding and your family.
