Meet Madison ‘Mama Bird’ Hendry!
Our Meet-a-Mom this week is a former Cleveland East-Sider (current West Sider) with a very cool back story. Please meet Madison Hendry, a working artist turned professional mother’s advocate and champion for breastfeeding moms everywhere. She has an MFA in sculpture and her artwork has been exhibited and published internationally. However, after the premature birth of her second son, she found herself fascinated with the mother/infant relationship. This new fascination shifted not only her subject matter, but also her perspective. Her most recent solo exhibition; “mother/infant“, was based on her NICU experience. Her fascination also inspired her to action, and as of 2018 she’s a Certified Breastfeeding Educator and member of the Ohio Breastfeeding Alliance. A true mothers’ champion, Madison ‘mama bird’ hosts events regularly to support and promote breastfeeding for the health and well-being of infants as well as mothers. She sponsors fundraisers to help other NICU families afford hospital parking or sponsored breastfeeding consultations. In addition to all of this, she’s also on the advisory board for Project Preemie. Interested to learn more? Read on!
Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in town?
I grew up in Sagamore Hills, on the Eastside of Cleveland. I attended college in South Carolina (USC), Florida (FAU) and completed my Masters of Fine Arts in Sculpture at Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY. I met my husband in Brooklyn and after we had our first child, we bought a house on Cleveland’s West side 3 years ago!
Children and Ages?
We have two beautiful boys, Angus and Huckleberry. It was after Huck’s birth, I became fascinated with the mother/infant relationship. He was born 3 months premature and it was in that time I realized how important I was for his survival and both of our over health and well-being. The 4th trimester is such an important time for healing for ALL moms and babies. (for more of Madison’s story, click here!)
One thing people would be surprised to know about you…
I like to work on my art in complete silence. Maybe that’s why I haven’t made a lot of work during the past few years …
Anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you through parenthood?
My babies! I have learned to let go and listen to their needs- it became much easier! I couldn’t have mothered both my sons during our NICU journey without the help of my family. They took care of EVERYTHING, so I could focus on my two babies- one at home and the other in the hospital. Thank you, family!!!
Favorite things to do with your kids?
Be home. What can I say- I’m a Homebody! We love to garden and snuggle on the sofa, bake and play in the studio. We also love to go on hikes and be outdoors 💓
Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the
corporate world? Please share!
Yes! I created Mama Bird after completing my Breastfeeding Educator Certification. I provide mothers with consistent breastfeeding support throughout the transition into motherhood 💓 I offer In-Home Lactation support and classes.
I am working artist. My most recent solo exhibition conveys my experience throughout motherhood.
I am in the Advisory Board for Cleveland based Non-Profit, “Project Preemie”. We provide support and care packages for Cleveland NICU families and the individuals who care for them!
Basically- anything to do with motherhood and protecting the mother/infant relationship- I am all over it!
What does this community mean to you?
Oh, my! My life and my personal experience has brought me to a place I never thought I’d be! I have met the most wonderful women who have the same passions as I do. I am dedicated to helping ALL moms during their motherhood transition by providing support, education and resources.
I hold 2 monthly groups for moms- we talk about motherhood, I provide FREE on-site breastfeeding support. We have guest speakers, giveaways and much more!

What a Connecticut Mom wants you to know about COVID-19 and her recovery!
Local Mom of 4 and co-owner of Class 101 Cleveland, meet Jackie Zahuranec! She and her husband are Cleveland’s leading college admissions advisors!
A few days ago, I asked my friend and fellow Mom to write about her experience as a Doctor right now. She has been sharing helpful and sobering information on her Facebook page almost daily as she and other healthcare workers battle COVID-19 and put their own lives in danger!! I asked if she would write something for all of us and below is her story!! Her name is Dr. Gabrielle Koczab, she recently just finished battling a heroic fight with breast cancer and she is one (of many) of the reasons we all need to STAY HOME!!! And she’s also one of the reasons why we need to tell our kids to STAY HOME!!! And did I mention: STAY HOME!!!
