Tell me about how you became an author!  How/why did you start it and how did you know this is what you wanted to do?

My daughter Bella Lee motivated me to become an author, when I became a parent of a beautiful girl. I was driven to start educating her on the basics. At the early age of one month, I realized my teachings had a positive impact on her intellect. I believe every child has the same potential if given the opportunity to learn.

I knew being an author was something I wanted to do. When I walked into a library and I was unable to find a counting book that went passed the number 10 with large print. I felt that only teaching our children to count to 10 is underestimating what they are truly capable of.

How did you grow awareness of your poetry and children’s books? Are you also the illustrator?

I grew up performing live poetry. I was first introduced to performing poetry at Lee Road Library in Cleveland Heights Ohio. I joined poetry SLAMS at the library and after I won a few poetry SLAMS. I was then invited to perform some of my poetry at Play House Square. After becoming passionate about performing poetry I than went on to start a poetry club with a good friend of mine Jasmine Redd at The University of Akron.  At The University of Akron, I took a summer course in Children’s book illustration. I absolutely loved the class.

Are you also the illustrator?

I am not the illustrator of Bella Lee Children’s books. A really good friend of mine, Syler Warren who also attended The University of Akron with me is the illustrator. He was also an Art Major and worked with me at some art shows. I admire his artwork. He is Phenomenal.

My proudest accomplishment happens every day as I continue to accomplish goals that are for Bella Lee’s (my daughters) best interest.
.
.
.

What was your biggest failure?

My biggest failure was not doing as much community service when I was younger. Now I see the true value of helping people and the community. That gives you the true feeling of a great appointment.

I am most passionate about helping children in the inter-city schools!

What’s the one thing you’re most passionate about?

My pearl of wisdom I would want others to know is a quote from the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr:
.

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”
.
.
.

I love that!  I keep telling my kids to keep moving forward all the time, no matter what!!  What is the biggest resource you have used to help you become a published author?

My friends. I have two friends who are published authors, Kenneth Page and Reggie Nelson, without their help I wouldn’t be an author today.

How do you juggle everything that goes into being a Mom these days?

It’s not always easy, but it is very rewarding. It takes a village to help out at times and I am grateful for the village I have.
.
.
.

Where do you hope to be in 10 years?

I hope to see myself making a difference in the way young people view themselves. I would love for all children to know that they are beautiful, smart and will make a difference in the world.
.
.
.

What would you tell your younger self that you now know?

I would say everything will be ok and you can do anything even when it seems impossible.
.
.
.

What have you found rewarding about having your books published that was unexpected?

What I found most rewarding about having Bella Lee’s Books published are the smiles on the little boys and girls’ faces, knowing that when they open up a Bella Lee Book they are learning what they need for success. 💚
