Mommas, I’m so excited to introduce you to Kimmie Johnson, co-founder of Your Milk Shoppe and local mompreneur!
Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in town?
I was born and raised in Columbus. After college, I moved to Arizona with my husband. We had a good run in the southwest, but a job relo took us to Chicago where we had our two kiddos. We love Chicago and miss it dearly, but we knew it had hit its expiration for us and it was time to come back home to Ohio. We moved to Shaker Heights in April and absolutely love it!
Children and Ages?
My husband Eli and I have two babes, Sam (3.5) and Quinn (15 months). We also have two fur babies, our senior citizen puggles, Hendrix and Harvey.
One thing people would be surprised to know about you…
Aside from the windows-down-volume-up jam sesh, I typically prefer to listen to podcasts in the car and music at home. When running from A to B to C, I’m podcasts all day. It helps me stay current and fresh with topics I’m interested in, and I love the extra language exposure for my little ones when they’re in the car with me. When we’re at home, we play music and wiggle non-stop!
Anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you through parenthood?
My #1 MVP is my hubs, hands down. He’s an amazing parenting partner and he paddles extra hard to keep our life-boat afloat, which I’m so grateful for. I’m also very fortunate to have a village of incredible women that support my mommin’ journey: my mom, mother-in-law, sisters, sisters-in-law, and close girlfriends.
Aside from these lovelies, is it fair to say ALL the Mamas??? I find so much inspiration and strength from standard, everyday interactions with fellow moms. There is power in a “SAME HERE!” or even a simple shared smile of encouragement, it never ceases to revive me. Motherhood can be isolating at times. The struggle is real, and we’re all just doing the best we can. It is important to cheer each other on and remind one another that we’re not alone, in any of this!
Favorite things to do with your kids?
Anything outside. We ALL thrive on fresh air, so whether it’s a walk down to Juma for coffee, a hoof around Horseshoe Lake, or my son’s personal favorite, a trip to the Zoo, we are all happy campers when the sun shines on our faces. And, if we can end the adventure with a scoop of Mitchell’s ice cream?!? Forget it. Day.Made.
Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the
corporate world? Please share!
Yes! I co-own a small business with my amazing sister-in-law that supports new and expectant mamas. Your Milk Shoppe was founded by moms for moms as a means to support a woman’s transition into motherhood. So much attention is given to baby during pregnancy, birth and beyond (which, rightfully so!) but our sole focus is on mom’s experience. It is our mission to provide mothers-to-be with the necessary tools to not only feel prepared -but totally rock- welcoming their newest addition. We offer services ranging from baby planning & concierge to nanny placement to childproofing, and really anything and everything she could need from the moment she finds out she’s pregnant through that first year.
In addition to serving individual families, we’ve begun partnering with corporations to support their parent employee base with family prep programs: the YMS Peace of Mind Initiative & Happiest Baby on the Block, a course based on the book and baby calming method by Dr. Harvey Karp. Your Milk Shoppe’s mission: “We are the milk that keeps the moms alive, because moms need milk, too!” It is one of my life’s greatest gifts to get to support women when they need it most, during one of the most transitional times in life: becoming a mother.
What does this community mean to you?
I am in awe of this Shaker community and the overall Cleveland culture that places such an emphasis on supporting small and shopping local. I wasn’t sure what we’d be walking into coming from Chicago, but it has exceeded my every expectation, and then some. There is so much pride in this city. I’m thrilled to be here and feel so lucky to be a part of it!
