We are really excited to introduce you to this week’s Meet a Mom feature, Dr. Megan Shiga, DDS.

I first met Megan when our daughters were classmates at the same school (just last year).  She was able to come into their class to teach the kids about oral hygiene and the importance of brushing your teeth and honestly, my daughter hasn’t stopped talking about awesome Dr. Shiga (in her little voice it sounds like Dr. Sugah).  All the kids loved her!  Every time she (my daughter) brushes and flosses, she makes sure to tell me how the dentist taught her to do it at school.  She even critiques me when I brush!

Dr. Shiga owns her own family dental practice, Dentistry of Chagrin, in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.   If you are looking for a new Dentist, you will be hard pressed to find someone as caring, gentle and thorough at Dr. Shiga!

Where are you originally from and what is your background?

I grew up on the westside of Cleveland in Fairview Park.  I received my Bachelor’s of Science degree from John Carroll University and then continued my education at THe Ohio State University College of Dentistry where I received my doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS).

Tell me about your family.

My family and I live in Shaker Heights.  We have lived in the area since I finished my DDS degree in Columbus 12 years ago.   I have three girls. Morgan will be 5 at the end of the summer, Mary Grace will be 3, and I have a 9-month-old names Maeve.

What is your favorite thing(s) about living in Cleveland?

I love Lake Erie, the culture, the restaurants and my friends and family who live here.

What is the one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

I ran a full marathon with a friend without training for it and finished with a respectable time!

How did you start your dental business?

Prior to having three girls under 5 to take care of after work, I was on the board of the Greater Cleveland Dental Society, President of the GCDS Foundation, on sub councils for the Ohio Dental Association, and a yearly participant in Give Kids a Smile Day.  I was able to meet a lot of great people through those organizations. I started my business by purchasing an existing dental practice from a dentist who was moving out of state.

What is the key to keeping your practice successful as a busy mom of 3?

Just following one of my basic principles: Treat others how I would want to be treated.  And I couldn’t do it without the enormous amount of help my husband and nanny, Mary, provide.

What do you wish more people would know about their mouth and teeth?

The oral systemic correlation is real.  The healthier your mouth is the healthier your body is.  Inflammation in the mouth has real effects on your other organs.  Taking care of your smile has many benefits.

What is the biggest payoff of owning your own practice?

Being home with my children on Fridays and some Mondays!

What are you most passionate about?

Teaching proper oral hygiene to anyone who will listen and raising kind little girls.

What is your most proudest accomplishment?

My family.  It’s amazing how much your can love such little people.

What is your biggest regret?

Not dating my husband sooner!
