Nonprofit Spotlight – Rockin’ Frocks
Growing up as a young girl, there are handful of occasions, like homecoming & prom, that teenage girl dreams are made of – the dresses, the shoes, the jewelry, the up-dos. It just all makes you feel so darn special. But for some girls, these moments can feel more stressful than special. Rockin Frocks works passionately to give girls in need these special moments that they truly deserve.
Started by a teenage girl, Sammy Imrie, for her Girl Scout Gold award, Rockin’ Frocks is a totally unique and awesome organization that promotes positive self-esteem and self-worth for all girls – from teens with special needs, to sex trafficking survivors, girls in foster system, abuse & neglect victims, as well as girls from low income families – by providing them with the perfect formal dress for their special occasion. The entire organization is run by volunteers which allows all the donations to go directly back to the girls.
One of these volunteers, Kerri Symes, wishes Rockin’ Frocks was around when she were younger. Now she gives her all as a volunteer seamstress to provide each girl with a dress perfect for her. And she has done it all – “altered dresses to make them fit, added sleeves to cover scars for someone who was self-conscious, and added sleeves and a high neckline for a student seeking a modest look.” She says, “Heck, I have even made a dress from scratch for someone who couldn’t find one she loved in her size.” Now that is dedication with a whole lot of love mixed in.
But Rockin’ Frocks isn’t just for girls in need, it is also open to anyone looking for a formal occasion dress. So if you’re in the market for a perfect gown, head over to Rockin’ Frocks in Northfield. I’m sure they have exactly what you’re looking for. And your perfect dress purchase, well, that will go right back where it is needed most – turning girls in need into frock stars.
