The Thankful Pumpkin – A Great New Tradition
With Halloween around the corner and Thanksgiving shortly to follow, the Thankful Pumpkin craft is a double-win. This is an easy, meaningful craft can easily become an annual tradition. Added bonus that it puts those Halloween pumpkins to a great secondary use!
Amy Latta first shared the Thankful Pumpkin craft on her blog, Amy Latta Creations, in 2011. SInce then, the craft has exploded, becoming an annual tradition for families throughout the world. It was even featured on TODAY parents!
“At meals, we were playing the ‘thankful game,’ where we would take turns going around the table and saying things we were grateful for, and I thought it would be fun for [Noah] — and for all of us — to physically see just how many blessings that added up to,” – Amy Latta on TODAY Parents.
The Thankful Pumpkin is incredibly simple – all you need is a permanent marker and a pumpkin. Sit your kids around the table and ask them what they’re thankful for, then write it down. You don’t have to complete the entire pumpkin in one sitting – in fact, maybe you shouldn’t. Instead, start your pumpkin the day after Halloween and add to it every night until Thanksgiving (it’s OK if you need another pumpkin!).
Another helpful tip: Pick one color marker per family member & stick with it. That way when you look back on your Thankful Pumpkin photos for years to come, you’ll know who mentioned each item.
Don’t forget to take a picture of your Thankful Pumpkin when it’s finished – you’ll love looking at them over the years!
