Nature Names Activity

by | Jan 16, 2019 | Crafts

Creating art with names is an authentic way to teach letters. Children feel motivated and interested when learning feels important to them. Our names are a part of our identity. When exploring names, children begin to notice and learn the names and sounds of letters in a meaningful way.

Go on a nature walk and collect items like leaves, sticks, pine needles, and acorns. Observe and discuss the shapes of the items. Sort items into trays or bowls by shape.

Suggested Supplies (set-up)

Kraft Paper

Colorations Trays

Paint Brushes

Metal Bowls

Shallow Mason Jars

Project Supplies

Elmer’s Glue (Washable)

Sharpie Markers

Write, or have your child write, their name across a sheet of white cardstock. Pour white glue into mason jar or bowl and add paintbrush.

Ask your child, “What do you notice about these materials? What do you notice about the letters of your name? Are any of the shapes or lines the same?”

Have your child trace the first letter with a paintbrush of glue. Add nature items to follow along the letters. Repeat with each letter. While your child works talk about what they love about their name. Share stories about why you chose their name when they were born.

Repeat this project with last name, family member’s names, sight words, street name, whatever words your child is interested in!
